Chongju was known for having a high
quality printing and publishing culture f°³m old times. The
earliest metal type printed book Jikji says it all.
Furthermore, the fact that Jikji was registered as UNESCO's
reconfirmed that Chongju's old printing
and publishing culture was at a high level.
The Goryeo era
There is no specific
historical data that tells about Chongju's old printing and
publishing culture on the three state period or the Unified
Shilla. Goryeo era's printing and publishing culture
policy was a centralized policy. Therefore, no special aspects
were shown of Chongju's printing and publishing culture. The
temples that published books in Chongju were Wonhung temple
and Hungdeok temple.
In Goryeo era only 3 Buddhist
books were published in Chongju, however, the fact that Jikji
and Jabidoryangchambubjibhae was a metal type printed book,
makes it a historical achievement.
