Mushim Stream that runs
across Cheongju starts at Sangdae-ri, Gaduk-myun,
Chungwon-goon, stretches 17.5 km, and runs into Miho Stream at
Wonpyung-dong, Cheongju. The name Mushimchun has been used
since 18th century but nobody is sure about the origin of the
name. Currently, many people understand it as Empty the mind
which is a concept from Buddhism. There was a big bridge
called Nam Suk Bridge long time ago but now it is bury
underground with sewage.
There are many historic
relics along Mushim Stream such as Nam Suk Bridge, stone
sculpture of a general in Yonghwa Temple which is designated
the National Treasure number 985, Shinbong-dong Baekje ruins,
Chuldanggan, and Mangsunru. These historical relics prove that
Mushim Stream is the artery of Cheongju and it has been
providing living space to people in Cheongju for a long time.
However, historical Mushim Stream was no exception to
modern development and it suffered from destruction of
ecological environment. Thanks to peoples efforts to bring
Mushim Stream back to life, once disappeared fish started
appearing recently. It is expected to be a healthy and natural
stream due to revival plan. Mushim Stream is an invaluable
asset for making Cheongju an environmentally favorable city.
