The Clear Village, Cheoungju

Chung-Ju has been a town of noble people for a long time, and its nobility spirit is still alive. It also has been called a town of culture and education.
The reason for such reputation of Chung-ju is that it has a thousand year old history and legacy and has left many cultural inheritances and important people. Since United Sinla period, it has educated people, and in Goryeo period it made the best printed type in the world. Suhwonhyangyak, origin of local autonomy was also born in this city also. When the nation was in danger, people in this city were loyal and brave enough to get armed and fight.
With the inheritance of cultural pride, Chung-ju is trying to re-born as a dynamic city. It has held several international events such as air exposition, international technological Biennale and print publication exhibition. It took the first place for evaluation. This city really deserves that award because of its effort to preserve the tradition and create new culture.

 The Clear Village, Cheoungju

Cheoungju has been called a city of loyalty, filial piety, courtesy, noble people and clear nature for a long time. It's also known for a city of education and culture. Today, it is recognized as a city that holds the history of a thousand year and the origin of the oldest metal print type in the world.
People began to live in Cheoungju area in the Old Stone Age, and in the Bronze Age, villages were formed by the people in Cheoungju area. The remains of the villages are still remaining. Cheoungju was originally a land belonged to a kingdom called Mahan. However, when it fell under BaekJae, one of the kingdoms during the period of the Three Kingdoms, it was called by the name Sangdanghyun, Nangjagoksung or Nangbisung. It was the United Sinla period when Cheoungju was called Suhwonkyung and played a role as a central city in the basin of Kumkang River.
The name, Cheoungju which also means 'the clear city' was first used the 23rd year of the founder of Goryeo's reign(940). Since then, it has been recognized as a clear city, and even the tourists from other countries have that impression.
In 1949 it was raised to the status of a city. Since then, it has grown to have two wards, 28 villages and 590,000 people. There are many secondary school education institutions and national parks which attract tourists. As Cheoungju International Airport is built, it is becoming a important city for high technology and trade.
